NAS and Microsoft Windows Storage Server
Microsoft Windows Servers as Filers

Windows servers can be dedicated to file sharing and Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions such as Windows Storage server appliances provide a low-cost and simple approach to managing storage and file shares. File Shares (network accessible folders and files) are delivered to and accessed by many users over the LAN. It is a simple approach to sharing data and files unless of course everyone wants to get at the same info at the same time - that's when things slow to a crawl.

The NAS engine is dependent on fast access to the disk subsystem that contains all the file shares. Access to often used disk data can be significantly improved by utilizing UpTempo dedicated disk cache such that disk volumes read and write data is accelerated by the UpTempo caching mechanisms. When everyone wants to see the same file, it is a lot faster to service those reads from fast memory-based cache than having to go to the slow disks each time a request occurs.

Many NAS systems are maxed out and bottlenecked on disk I/O performance since they typically start small and grow fast - soon more users are sharing info, and a lot of multiple users and applications are concurrently trying to access file shares with each request generating a load of disk activity. Bottom line, file shares are storage intensive and ideal candidates for UpTempo's disk caching technology. UpTempo can greatly enhance performance and increase the scalability of the NAS system to handle even greater loads of user traffic by maximizing existing resource utilization.
  • Concurrent and multi-user access of file shares stress and bog down NAS disks
  • Performance often limits scalability
  • Beats the alterative of having to buy another NAS device just to add more performance
  • Enhances NAS resource utilization and delivers a better overall user experience
The Performance Problem: Many factors impact overall performance. However, the four fundamentals are: network, processor, memory and disk. Of these four, the most common performance bottleneck is disk input/output (I/O) access. Processors, networks and memory have advanced dramatically each year while disk I/O advances continue to greatly lag the industry. Disk performance now represents the major bottleneck to optimal system and application performance.

The Solution: Use DataCore's UpTempo to boost Disk I/O performance

When disk I/O bottlenecks limit system performance, other system resources wait idly by. By putting these resources to work, system performance is improved. UpTempo's powerful disk cache helps optimize system resource utilization by applying processor and memory resources to the I/O bottleneck problem.

The UpTempo block-level cache assesses your workload I/O patterns and optimizes the flow of I/O traffic between memory and disk locations. Inserted into the path of the I/O subsystem, it learns to cache the most active read/write disk I/O. With UpTempo enabled, the cache technology reduces context switching, enhances server response and results in a much more satisfying and productive user experience.
