Messaging and Collaboration Servers
IBM Lotus Domino Server
Microsoft Exchange Server

Messaging and collaboration servers, such as IBM's Lotus Domino server and Microsoft's Exchange Server, are responsible for managing the flow of various forms of interactive communications among users, enhancing the dynamics of those interactions. However, for maximum effectiveness, a highly responsive environment must be maintained. This can be challenging, especially when high numbers of large interactions are occurring among users.

Heavy loads impact efficient collaboration
When the volume of user transactions increases greatly, the time required for a user to view his or her schedule, contacts, and tasks, or to send or received e-mails, etc., may increase from a fraction of a second to many seconds. More traffic may mean more congestion and taking more time than usual to complete. These latencies begin to erode a user's sense of productivity, distracting him or her from the tasks at hand. Users don't want sluggish behavior; they want fast and predictable response.

The disk I/O bottleneck
A common cause of these conditions is a disk I/O bottleneck. Most user applications and interactions require access to storage devices (i.e., Disks). As the volume of data being retrieved and stored by the server grows, the disk subsystem begins to constrain the system's overall performance. Although Lotus Domino and Exchange Server feature internal caches, their effectiveness is reduced as the number of users and I/O transactions increase. These internal caches tend to be used for caching code segments often used vs. a cache dedicated to disk I/O transactions

Use DataCore's UpTempo to boost Disk I/O performance
When disk I/O bottlenecks limit system performance, other system resources wait idly by. By putting these resources to work, system performance is improved. UpTempo's powerful disk cache help optimize system resource utilization by applying processor and memory resources to the I/O bottleneck problem.

The UpTempo block-level cache assesses your workload I/O patterns and optimizes the flow of I/O traffic between memory and disk locations. Inserted into the path of the I/O subsystem, it learns to cache the most active read/write disk I/O. With UpTempo enabled the cache technology reduces context switching, enhances server response and results in a much more satisfying and productive user experience.
