Which SANmelody™ category is right for me?

The SANmelody product family covers a wide range of capabilities, options and configurations to match your needs and budget. Whether you start with an entry-level implementation and upgrade over time or deploy a full-featured disk server from the outset, you will be getting the best combination of capacity, connectivity, performance, storage services and flexibility available.

The following chart will help guide your software selection by highlighting which software features and hardware configurations are supported by each of the four SANmelody categories (A, B, C and D).

* Client licenses for Alternate Pathing software for Windows and Solaris and industry-standard MultiPath IO (MPIO) for Windows iSCSI or Fibre Channel are available from DataCore (one license for each client is required). You may also use qualified third-party multipathing software.

Category A is ideal for smaller offices and workgroups that want improved performance and management and are able to utilize existing IP network interconnections (e.g. iSCSI, IP-SAN) for storage networking. In addition, the powerful Auto Provisioning option presents very large virtual volumes to applications, but only allocates disk blocks dynamically as the application consumes it. This "just-in-time" storage allocation option maximizes disk space utilization and enhances producticity through automation. It also offers the optional Snapshot feature, which provides point-in-time copies of volumes used in backups, testing and other applications.

Category B offers double the network connections and disk drive support as compared to Category A, providing a moderate-sized solution that meets a wide variety of performance and capacity requirements. SANmelody Category B also has optional Fibre Channel network support for high bandwidth storage area networking (SAN). The powerful Auto Provisioning option presents very large virtual volumes to applications but only allocates disk blocks dynamically as the application consumes it. It also offers the optional Snapshot feature, which provides point-in-time copies of volumes used in backups, testing and other applications. These features combine to support a larger number of application servers with greater capacity.

Category C is a great choice for protecting significant amounts of business critical data. Deploy a pair of SANmelody-equipped disk servers, add the Auto Failover software, and dramatically boost your ability to guard against outages and data loss by keeping redundant copies of data on separate disk drives - you can even spread the drives across the room, between floors, or between buildings! With even greater capacity support, more performance and bandwidth and Fibre Channel network connectivity included in the base price, this edition fulfills the requirements of compute-intensive environments and larger businesses and departments. The optional Auto Provisioning feature adds even greater flexibility in capacity utilization. Category C now includes the ability to mirror storage to remote disaster recovery sites over IP connections with the Asynchronous IP Mirroring option.

Category D is the ultimate in disk server software, offering an unprecedented level of features and flexibility for capacity expansion, data protection and ease of management. It doubles or more the amount of storage, network connections and CPUs in Category C for heavy duty data requirements. Available with all optional advanced software features, including Auto Provisioning and the ability to mirror storage to remote/ disaster recovery sites over IP connections (Asynchronous IP Mirroring), Category D delivers a tremendous value for any size business.

Tips:
Start by identifying which features you need to narrow down your selection. For example, if redundant disk servers with Auto Failover are required, then you can immediately narrow your options to C or D.

Next, consider how much disk capacity you anticipate controlling from the disk server. The maximum number of disk drives should reflect your preference between fewer higher capacity disk drives or more, faster but lower capacity drives.

To further narrow your selection, consider the workload being placed on the disk server- the more ports available for applications and the greater the CPUs available to the software, the greater the performance potential of the disk server.
