Simplified Centralized Windows Volume Administration – Eliminate Work
The administration and management of Windows volumes is now more centralized. If a user requests a Windows volume it can now be formatted with a file system (NTFS/FAT) on it. The administrator can also install requested files on the volume. Then this volume can be presented / mapped to the application server for immediate use. No additional administrative actions are required on the application server.
Consolidation of disk resources – Greater Flexibility
You now have the ability to migrate disparate Direct Attached Storage (DAS) disk hardware off of independent Windows Application servers and workstations to a centralized location managed by SANmelody Network services. These disks can continue to be used as is (mapped back to the owning application server) or re-purposed and re-configured into Virtual Capacity pools of available storage that will provide more effective use of the disk resources and provide wider use and access to these resources.
Immediate use and access of pre-existing Volume data – Save time
SANmelody provides the ability manage and immediately utilize ("As is" ) formatted (NTFS/FAT) Windows volumes. Being able to utilize formatted volumes (NTFS or FAT) allows the user the immediate use of pre-existing data that resides on the file system of that volume. Using SANmelody tools the volume can be easily presented / mapped to the application server or workstation and the data can be immediately accessed by applications requiring this data.
Windows Disk Data Migration made easy – Re-purpose or Move Rapidly
Additionally, now that the disk resource has been physically moved and the user has immediate access to his data the process of migrating the data in real time off of the old resources onto something newer can easily be accomplished. This can be achieved by using SANmelody’s Synchronous mirror capability, Snapshot Complete image or even Host Based mirroring. Once the migration is completed the application server can utilize the data on the newer disk technology. It becomes a simple administrative task to deliver the newer volume to the user. The old disk with the old data can be retired completely from the system or re-purposed for less important uses. Maybe near line backup, maybe less important applications, maybe as secondary disk to be used only in case of a primary disk failure.
Simplified backup – Efficient Disk to Disk Backup & Disk to Disk to Tape
Once all windows volumes have been consolidated behind and being managed by the SANmelody storage server all data can be backed up from a single point instead of from all the application servers and workstations. This can be achieved by using the Snapshot feature and mapping the point-in-time Snapshot destination to the backup server. This can be done for each volume that requires backup. This further centralizes the administrative management tasks of IT personnel.
DataCore VSS (Snapshot - SQL Server, Exchange 2003, & Windows 2003 file systems)
Simplified disk–to-disk backup and rapid disaster recovery for SQL Server database volumes, Exchange 2003 information stores and Windows 2003 file systems utilizing Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS). DataCore’s VSS provides the ability to create a point-in-time copy for all VSS-aware applications including SQL Server, Exchange 2003 and Windows 2003 file systems to ensure the applications are in a consistent state to enable rapid recovery from a point-in-time and to simplify backup processes. The volumes are delivered to the application servers from SANmelody over iSCSI. DataCore snapshot commands can be issued either locally or remotely (via synchronous disk-to-disk mirrors or AIM – Asynchronous IP Mirroring) to enable back-up copies or an offline application to utilize the data volumes. See DataCore VSS animation slides for functional operation.
DataCore SQLSnap (for SQL 2000 Database only)
This Windows 2000 application support package provides the ability to quiesce the SQL 2000 Database (DB) and then flush cache so that the DB volumes and log files are in a consistent state. If the DB volumes involved are delivered to the application server from SANmelody then a Snapshot command can be issued, while the DB is in a quiesced state, which allows the consistent DB set to be backed up or used by an offline application. In addition, while the DB is in a quiesced state, AIM marker commands can be issued to the AIM source system that will in turn send the marker to a remote SANmelody system (AIM destination) to take a remote Snapshot the DB volumes. See DataCore SQLsnap animation slides for functional operation.
Non-disruptive use of SANmelody features – Power up all your disks!
- Easy to apply SANmelody features (performance and function) to volumes.
- Volume performance is improved by SANmelody’s built-in cache acceleration. The volume can be delivered (mapped) to Application servers over the FC or IP infrastructure.
- Synchronous mirrors can be configured so that the data is mirrored to a SANmelody partner in a high availability configuration. This provides continuous access to the data in case a failure occurs to the data volume.
- The Snapshot features can be used to generate a point-in-time snapshot of the data volume. Then other applications can utilize the point-in-time version for offline work.
- Asynchronous IP Mirrors can be used to transmit the volume to a remote site for disaster recovery or other remote site uses.
- All features can be utilized non-disruptively in real time as the volume is being utilized by the owning application servers.
- The administrator has the choice of "in the SAN or out" when required - no lock in, freedom to gain enhancements when needed.
