Virtualization Meets Continuous Data Protection: DataCore Unveils Traveller CPR - the Next Generation of CDP

Storage Networking World (SNW) - November 1, 2006 - Today, DataCore Software announced a ground-breaking product that will set a new standard for continuous data protection (CDP). The company has just released a new solution named Traveller?CPR (Continuous Protection and Recovery), which is an advanced CDP and high-availability mirroring solution for storage that enables data centers and SAN administrators to protect their data and rollback to any previous point in time prior to a disaster, virus attack, or other disruptive event.

"What we have brought to the market has previously been the stuff of market-spin from vendors who either could not deliver true, 'continuous data protection' or whose stand-alone appliances or software could not practically restore complex storage topologies," said Ziya Aral, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer. "The first offering under the Traveller umbrella targets the CDP space and because of the virtualization foundation inherent in Traveller, we believe this is the first, practical continuous data protection solution. Moreover for DataCore, Traveller represents an entirely new capability, whereby the core Traveller technology goes well beyond CDP. We feel confident that over time, Traveller will span and subsume the entire spectrum of requirements and functionality for data protection and data availability."

By addressing continuous data protection as well as recovery from DataCore's virtualization roots, Traveller?CPR will set a new standard for true CDP. Traveller puts DataCore's advanced storage virtualization capabilities to work with its new "dial back the clock" software and time-shifting technologies, which restore data to a known, "good" state prior to data corruption, virus attack or error event. The capability to rapidly "travel back in time" to a previous state greatly speeds up recovery from problems and facilitates retrieval of data prior to events that cause data to be destroyed or corrupted. Unlike snapshot technologies, which impact applications, generate large "gaps" between recovery points and require greater management and constant scheduling of "point in time images" of data to be snapped, DataCore's Traveller works transparently in the background at the storage level without impacting or disrupting applications.

"Just think of it, an administrator can go back in time to a moment before any calamity happened and get all of the data back as it was," said George Teixeira, President and CEO, DataCore Software. "Traveller logs and time stamps all the I/O changes to data asynchronously, without impacting production systems. Administrators gain the flexibility of utilizing time to easily "dial back the clock" so that they may either recreate the data for recovery, or provide different time images of the data to increase workflow productivity and add efficiency to the backup process. Storage becomes a time-addressable resource. Traveller makes it possible to use multiple time-addressable images so more work can be done in parallel."

The new DataCore Traveller?CPR solution is a continuous data protection, recovery and time-shifting platform. It combines CDP with the power of virtualization. With "dial back the clock" simplicity, Traveller restores data to any prior point in time selected, without impact to production and without the overhead of software agents or other host support. The restored data volumes (known as "MakeTime volumes") can then be assigned to servers directly from the Traveller interface with a simple mouse click and are immediately ready for use by applications in production or offline. Traveller protects all systems (Windows, LINUX, VMWare, Netware, MacOS, Solaris, AIX, UNIX), applications (e.g. Exchange, SQL, Sybase, Oracle) and all storage types across failover site distances spanning systems, rooms, buildings and campuses.

With Traveller, the user can:
  • "Travel in Time" for reliable, "true state" restores
  • Backup with zero impact or halts to production
  • Restore systems and data at disk speeds
  • Work in parallel to production to optimize workflow and consolidate backups
