Textile Machine Manufacturer Deploys DataCore SANmelody iSCSI Solution

Tailor-Made Storage Solution Speeds Backups and Simplifies Management

Munich - June 20, 2005 — Textile machine manufacturer Karl Mayer Malimo installed an iSCSI storage solution running on standard hardware powered by DataCore's SANmelody(tm) software. Kiefel Informationssysteme, an expert in IT system architectures, realized the solution would need more than a terabyte of low-cost storage, accessible from a central server over a standard LAN. They wanted performance, ease-of-use and low cost; therefore, they chose a SANmelody iSCSI disk server. The scalable and high-speed solution provided this producer of textile machines with a cost-effective alternative to the more expensive Fibre Channel technology.

A lack of data storage capacity, ever-expanding data volume size and shrinking backup windows led Karl Mayer Malimo to upgrade and centralize its storage. The DataCore(tm) solution prevailed over several NAS systems because it could scale and meet performance requirements. Kiefel was able to redesign and implement the complete project within three weeks, months sooner than they had anticipated.

"Faced with the multitude of IT tasks and the flexibility required, a central and scalable storage solution was absolutely critical," said Uwe Claus, CIO of Karl Mayer Malimo. Storage provision is automated, upgrades are independent of hardware, while backup and restore times were reduced many times over."

Today, at Karl Mayer Malimo, servers operating with Windows 2000/2003 (SAP, Exchange, File Services, Backup Server) are automatically provisioned with SANmelody virtual capacity. The SANmelody software is installed on a standard PC server (IBM xSeries 345) and is connected via SCSI to a storage array with 14 SCSI disks, increasing storage capacity to more than a terabyte. Scalability is assured because disks can simply be added according to future capacity and performance requirements.

In addition to automated storage provisioning, Karl Mayer Malimo also benefits greatly from DataCore's snapshot technology. These snapshot copies are used to facilitate the backup process and are available for fast restores. Through these capabilities and the performance gains realized with SANmelody software, KMM was able to solve its problem with shrinking backup windows and meet the challenge of protecting its data. High-availability features like mirroring and alternate pathing were also integrated.
