DataCore Disk-to-Disk Performance Adds Up the Savings for WEC Accounting Firm

SANmelody Reduces Veritas Backup Window by 10 Hours

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (March 4, 2005) — Wall, Einhorn, & Chernitzer, P.C. (WEC) at its Norfolk, Virginia, office decided to install a DataCore SANmelody™-based storage network to solve two fundamental problems: first, the critical need to shrink back up time for their production workloads, and second, the need to eliminate the downtime to add more disk space to application servers in an environment that doubles its overall storage capacity each year. WEC within a couple of hours installed a SANmelody storage network without impacting normal operations and the existing tape backup process. The benefits were instantaneous; WEC administrators no longer had to shut down systems to add disk space and more importantly SANmelody dramatically sped up disk performance by a factor of 3 times enabling the backup window to shrink by over 10 hours - far exceeding expectations.

The good news from the standpoint of Ann Schneider, IT Director for WEC, was the ease of installation, the new found simplicity to manage disks and best of all the performance results. "It took us a couple of hours to install a SANmelody SAN, and the installation was completely seamless. I still can't believe that once SANmelody kicked in the backup times dropped down to 4 hours."

When IT administrators, using Veritas Backup Exec, discovered that WEC's tape backup window had grown to over 14 hours, they knew the problem was going to get a lot worse as their production workloads continued to grow each day. WEC and their IT consultant quickly contacted DataCore to evaluate SANmelody's ability to do fast disk-to-disk backups. The hope was that they would see some improvement in the backup times and that the new virtual capacity feature would make serving disks a lot easier. The results exceeded expectations, and after installing SANmelody, the overall backup time for using Veritas was cut to less than a third of what it was; and the tape backup process did not have to be changed -DataCore inserted speed and the flexibility to use low cost disks to optimize the existing backup process.
