Adaptec Japan and DataCore Announce Joint Marketing Solutions; Combining Storage Systems with Virtualization

TOKYO, JAPAN-Translation- (December 2, 2004) — The industry's global leader of storage access solutions, Adaptec Japan (HQ: Tokyo Nakano, President Joe Pureso) and the Japanese subsidiary of storage management software developer DataCore Software, DataCore Japan (HQ: Tokyo Chiyoda, Managing Director Peter Thompson) today announced that the two companies are actively working together to promote iSCSI and low cost storage system solutions. Adaptec has focused its business development efforts on SCSI, Serial ATA RAID, and external storage products, and as a result has been successful in growing the business. Most recently it has expanded its penetration of the iSCSI market. DataCore has seen a significant ramp up of business for its SANmelodyTM disk server software which DataCore positions as storage virtualization targeted to the small-to-mid size business segment, and focusing on OEM deals to expand storage consolidation, mirroring, and disaster recovery in larger enterprises. Adaptec and DataCore are now able to provide cost effective and reliable iSCSI storage systems with powerful virtualization and management, combining DataCore's SANmelody software and Adaptec's iSCSI storage products through channel partners.

Initial offerings are based on SANmelody which runs installed on standard Intel server platforms that are connected by iSCSI or fibre channel to application servers. SANmelody resides as a layer of software between application servers and storage. To meet different customer requirements, two initial models are being marketed:

1. Disk-to-disk Backup Snapshot Model
SANmelody snapshot function will be used to create disk back ups from the primary volume, creating a point in time backup volume. Using Adaptec SANbloc™ as the main storage, and Adaptec FS4500 as backup storage, even if the main volume fails, users can use the backup storage copy of their disks by just changing the mapping of volumes within SANmelody. It is a well-balanced system configuration in terms of data protection and cost, due to the fact that reliable and high-performance storage based on fibre channel is used as primary storage, and cost effective SATA storage is used for back up storage in case of failures. Reference price for a basic configuration is estimated at $50,000.

2. Real-time Disk Backup model
This model contains two SANmelody powered disk servers with separate storage (Adaptec SANbloc RAID) on each system. The systems are synchronized through a fibre channel connection between the two SANmelody systems; each can store data to two Adaptec SANbloc RAIDs simultaneously. Creating primary disk storage volumes and back up volumes on each SANbloc, in the event one side has a failure, the other system will immediately take over the process, and the application servers can continuously work without interruption or knowledge of the failure. Reference price of this model is estimated about $70,000.

Also note, using the Adaptec iSCSI card "Adaptec iSCSI Card 7211 C/F", the operating system can be set up to boot through iSCSI.

The two companies have initiated a joint marketing accord, and now are focusing on a series of joint events and promotional plans. The companies in Japan are targeting sales of 100 models in the first year.
