SANsymphony™ Enhances Storage Resource Utilization for IT Provider at German Financial Services Group

Sparkassen Informatik Gets a Highly Available Storage Solution

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (December 9, 2003) — DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class, open-storage networking software, has installed its SANsymphony™ storage management system at Sparkassen Informatik. Sparkassen Informatik is the largest provider of IT services in the Sparkassen Group, a German savings and loan institution. The system allows Sparkassen Informatik to mirror data between two storage area networks (SANs) at two separate data centers. Besides protecting against data loss and providing high availability for business-critical applications, Sparkassen Informatik is benefiting from the cost advantages of centralized storage management, which has contributed to improving hard disk utilization from 50 to over 85 percent.

Capacity shortfalls, high SAN management software costs and high outlays of time and staff on storage management for the Windows server environment led Sparkassen Informatik to consolidate using SANsymphony software. SANsymphony is an open, cross-platform storage management platform that manages all storage resources in a centralized virtual pool, automatically allocating storage from the SAN to the applications and mirroring the production data from one computer center to a contingency site. Upon selecting SANsymphony, all the storage-intensive Windows servers in the SAN - approximately 30 servers based on Windows 2000 or Windows NT - began to receive storage services from SANsymphony.

"We were looking for a highly available storage solution that would let us cut the operating costs of our existing SAN infrastructure without sacrificing performance," said Matthias Walter, head of Sparkassen Informatik's Windows Server Systems Department in Münster, Germany. "We found the solution in SANsymphony. All in all, we can respond to customer requests faster and more flexibly than ever before."

SANsymphony is running on high performance, off-the-shelf IBM servers with Windows 2000. The SANsymphony nodes currently control a total of 10 TB of storage capacity for 30 Windows servers running bank-specific applications, SQL and Oracle data base systems, Lotus Domino, and file and system management services. Besides high availability, Sparkassen Informatik also makes use of SANsymphony's Network Managed Volumes (NMVs). NMVs automatically provide applications with storage from the storage pool as the need arises. Only storage capacity that is physically needed is allocated, thereby boosting storage utilization. Storage expansion occurs automatically without host-based repartitioning, with its time-consuming reboots and lengthy application downtimes.

"SANsymphony is a flexible solution with an open approach that makes it fit perfectly into existing SAN architectures - and enables them to grow and improve as technology changes," said Bharat Kumar, EMEA marketing director at DataCore. "Such investments pay for themselves quickly through lower operating costs and greater storage utilization. SAN hardware is being deployed extensively in the financial sector to cope with huge data volume and stringent security requirements. All the same, far too many companies find they are unable to take maximum advantage of their existing infrastructure. We're delighted to help Sparkassen Informatik get the best out of its storage resources."

To follow up the successful launch of the storage solution, Sparkassen Informatik plans to install two more SANsymphony servers to further improve the availability and performance of its data through quadruple failure protection. For storage expansion, Sparkassen Informatik is already profiting from the open network architecture of DataCore technology. Inexpensive JBODS can be used instead of high-end RAID arrays, since SANsymphony's high-performance and availability attributes improve the quality of service of all the underlying hardware, regardless of class or vendor.
