Napp Pharmaceuticals Selects DataCore Software's Open Storage Platform

SANsymphony™ Beats at the Heart of Napp's Storage Solution

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (December 2, 2003) — DataCore Software, a leading supplier of enterprise-class, open-storage networking software, today announced that Napp Pharmaceuticals Limited selected SANsymphony™ software to manage its storage environment. This gives Napp freedom to purchase from any hardware vendor while maintaining the benefits of consolidated storage management, providing a storage solution that is truly scalable and highly available.

Napp is a research-based pharmaceutical company with expertise in innovative controlled-release drug delivery technology. It takes pride in a list of therapeutic firsts, especially in breakthrough products for the relief of severe pain. The company's research and development program continues to ensure the availability of new products to give even more help to patients and care givers. Based in Cambridge, England, on the Cambridge Science Park, Napp is currently ranked in the top 10 percent of UK pharmaceutical companies by sales and is 7th highest in prescription growth among the top 25 UK pharmaceutical companies.

"Today, pharmaceutical companies like ours are faced with extremely complex storage management tasks," said Professor Roger James, Napp's director of business systems. "Our growing research and the increasing data driven by the higher hurdles of product efficacy and safety are forcing an exponential growth in our data storage requirements, a phenomenon seen across the pharmaceutical industry. At Napp we have two distance-separated computer rooms for reasons of capacity and resilience. SANsymphony allows us to exploit all the components of our storage infrastructure from the modern to the legacy. It even allows us to integrate, under the same management and backup operation, the different families of storage technology resulting from our earlier, single vendor policy."

SANsymphony delivers enterprise-class features throughout the storage network independently of hardware. Network Managed Volumes, one of the unique features of SANsymphony, automates storage allocation, offering a true storage-on-demand solution. SANsymphony's snapshot capability prepares time-specific images, or copies, for data backup and recovery purposes between the computer rooms.

Napp will implement, under a single management framework, a 'value-based' storage strategy. Its requirements span from class A storage, delivering the high-cost, high-service, redundant storage arrays critical for production systems, through to class C, the exploitation of legacy storage assets for testing and training systems. This same asset pool also provides planned recovery capability in the case of a major disaster. "The same investment can be used for multiple purposes," commented Richard Rolt, operations manager at Napp. DataCore's SANsymphony product will be key to this. The DataCore solution ensures that whatever future strategies Napp chooses, either for application servers or storage infrastructure, it will continue to benefit from the software's many features without restriction, loss of performance or flexibility.

"SANsymphony is a highly scalable, extremely flexible open storage solution that is very successful in data intensive enterprises like Napp," said Barry Walker, DataCore's regional sales director. "DataCore is finding increasing acceptance in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sector. We provide Napp with a solution that simplifies storage management, lowers operating costs and will provide economic advantages in the future."
