Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG) Implements Scalable Storage Solution with SANsymphony™

Maximizes Availability for SAP, SQL and Other Applications

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (October 7, 2003) — DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class, open-storage networking software, today announced that Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG), the German finance and investment company and member of the KfW Group, has implemented SANsymphony™ software for SAN management. By mirroring data across two separate data centers, SANsymphony ensures high application availability while providing DEG a centralized point of management. The storage solution's consolidated administration and independence from proprietary hardware helps DEG minimize overall system costs. The project was completed by Kramer & Crew, a DataCore integration partner in Cologne.

Steady growth in data volume requires DEG to continually expand storage capacity. DEG wanted to find a solution that would allow it to add disks without interrupting applications and provides easy and flexible management. After external, vendor-independent analysis, the company chose SANsymphony as its SAN management platform to support existing HP storage hardware and assign capacity to several applications, including SAP, SQL, (Exchange and Windows file servers at some later date), from a single console. DEG also uses the powerful functionality of the SANsymphony platform to synchronously mirror data across two separate data centers and provide high levels of data protection and availability.

"We were looking for a cost-effective, flexible solution that could be integrated into our existing storage architecture. It needed to ensure high data and application availability and be independent of hardware," said Oliver Hepp of DEG. "DataCore met our requirements, providing redundancy for maximum security against breakdowns. We can easily expand the system simply by adding economical disks. By using NMVs the administration of increasing data in our environment is significantly easier. Implementing SANsymphony was the right decision for us."

The storage system is administered, monitored and configured via redundant SANsymphony storage domain servers running under Windows 2000, located at both the main computer center and an alternate one. After a one-time allocation process, DataCore's Network Managed Volumes feature provides storage capacity automatically and without further intervention by the administrator, lowering operating costs. To dynamically add more storage capacity in the future, additional disks can be easily added to the consolidated pool without interrupting the applications.

After an intensive selection process, SANsymphony won out over alternative storage solutions from major manufacturers, and DEG commissioned Kramer & Crew to implement and provide support for the project. "We were able to offer DEG the same flexibility demanded by many of our customers: an open solution that delivers scalable performance and capacity," said Uwe Kramer, managing director of Kramer & Crew GmbH. "In addition, SANsymphony has an outstanding price/performance ratio and substantially reduces the TCO for storage processes."

DataCore's open SAN management solution SANsymphony has attracted a steadily rising number of customers in the financial sector. "The rapid growth in data volume is a particularly serious problem for financial service providers like DEG, who are looking for high-performance solutions that can grow along with the data volume," said Volker Sommer, regional sales director at DataCore. "To meet the strict demands placed on data security and availability, SANsymphony can be implemented in existing storage infrastructures, making them highly available and even more powerful. We are pleased that DEG is now benefiting from the advantages of the SANsymphony platform."
