DataCore Announces Native iSCSI Support

SANsymphony™ Adds Inexpensive LAN Option for Accessing Heterogeneous Storage Pools

INTEL DEVELOPERS FORUM - SAN JOSE, Calif. (September 15, 2003) — DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class, open storage networking software, today announced that it will release native iSCSI support for its SANsymphony™ software in Q4 2003. The new capabilities allow any iSCSI-compliant host to access a broad range of centrally managed storage resources as if they were local disks over the Ethernet LAN connection. The storage devices need not be iSCSI-equipped, since SANsymphony handles the protocol translation from iSCSI Ethernet connections to the particular disk drive interface (parallel SCSI, Fibre Channel, EIDE, SATA, etc.). DataCore employs Intel architecture-based Storage Domain Servers to consolidate and automate the management of these heterogeneous storage devices, at the same time enhancing the functionality and performance of those subsystems. SANsymphony, as well as other DataCore storage networking technologies, are on display at the Intel Developers Forum this week in Booth #433.

"Our customers have a simple objective in mind: Round up all available storage into a pool and present it to applications over their conveniently built-in LAN connections. That's a pretty cost-effective way of putting to use what otherwise would be a mixed bag of equipment that was inaccessible by most of the organization," said DataCore's vice president of marketing, Ken Horner. "SANsymphony's iSCSI offering extends many of the benefits that Fibre-Channel connected hosts enjoy in the data center to LAN-connected servers outside the glass house, dramatically improving the return on investment from companies' storage infrastructure and making administrative centralization a reality."

With any new storage technology, there are two factors that impact customer deployments most: First, how quickly can the new technology be implemented on existing equipment, and second, how well has the new product been tested. DataCore's native iSCSI support addresses both of these points as only an independent software developer can. iSCSI connection access is available regardless of who supplies the underlying storage or the disk drive interface. Customers can take advantage of inexpensive iSCSI links without having to buy costly new arrays or retrofitting existing ones. With SANsymphony, the iSCSI-equipped hosts have access to all storage assets on-hand and benefit from a full range of SANsymphony-automated storage resource management options, including just-in-time provisioning, SAN-wide snapshots, remote replication and network caching.

When it comes to testing, customers can feel safe with the knowledge that DataCore has done exhaustive testing with both software- and hardware-offload iSCSI implementations, working closely with partners like Intel and Microsoft to ensure full compatibility and trouble-free rollout.

"For many enterprises, iSCSI is the missing piece in the SAN puzzle. Enterprises can now finally unlock the full benefits of consolidation while taking care of those users outside of the data center," said Mike Kahn, managing director of The Clipper Group, Inc., technology acquisition consultants based in Wellesley, Mass. He added: "DataCore's SANsymphony, now with iSCSI support, delivers a balanced combination of performance and advanced functionality at a price that reduces of the total cost of owning storage."
