Mannheim's Municipal Government Selects a DataCore-Powered Storage Server as Its Storage Management Solution

SANsymphony™ Manages a German City's Range of Digital Services

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (August 20, 2003) — DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class, open storage networking software, has implemented its SAN management solution, SANsymphony™ software, at the municipal government of Mannheim, Germany. This will enable the government to centrally manage storage, mirror data between separate locations and use its storage resources more effectively thanks to virtualization. Powerful network-wide storage services run on Intel-based Windows platforms, providing excellent price/performance benefits. SANsymphony simplifies the City of Mannheim's heterogeneous application server environment, reduces data migration complexity and stages new Linux environments to be easily incorporated at a later stage.

With a population of 325,000, Mannheim is the second-largest city in the German state of Baden-Wќrttemberg, and is the cultural and economic center of the Rhine-Neckar Triangle. The local government offers its 6,000 employees a comprehensive range of digital services and data storage. This forced to the government to upgrade to a storage area network (SAN) and centralize storage management functions through virtualization. DataCore's integration partner, CEMA GmbH, won the contract over respected competitors in a public tender because of the solution's large functional scope and outstanding price versus performance ratio.

As a central management interface, SANsymphony is the ideal solution, allowing us to maintain always-on high-availability and a flexible storage architecture. The system also makes sense in light of our tight public-sector budget, as SANsymphony reduces storage management and has reduced labor costs by half."

Virtualization is handled by two conventional Dell-supplied Windows 2000-based servers Powered by DataCoreTM. The servers are located in two separate server rooms to increase resiliency by eliminating single site failures. These storage domain servers combine multiple terabytes of storage capacity into a virtual storage pool, making it available to a heterogeneous application environment, which includes office communications, Oracle, Informix and other public service applications. The environment comprises roughly 100 servers running Linux, Solaris, Windows 2000 and Windows NT, together with over 3,300 desktop computers.

SANsymphony's open approach makes enterprise-class features available throughout the storage network, independent of hardware. The software's Network Managed Volumes (NMVs) automate storage capacity and offer maximum storage volumes. This ensures that only the storage capacity actually needed is used, saving valuable hardware and human resources. SANsymphony Snapshot prepares time-specific copies for data backup and recovery purposes in the second computer room. DataCore's Alternate Path Option ensures high-availability of the data paths, which enables the system to search for alternative paths in the event of a primary data path failure.

After additional storage capacity has been migrated to the SAN, the local government in Mannheim plans to implement a hierarchical storage management (HSM) system, where DataCore's SANsymphony product will play a central role.
