Degussa Puts DataCore SANsymphony to Work at Chemical Plant
High Availability and Cost-Effective Disaster Recovery Key to Selection
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (July 14, 2003) DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class, open storage networking software, today announced that Degussa AG, a Düsseldorf, Germany supplier of specialty chemicals, has implemented a storage area network (SAN) at its Wesseling plant based on the SANsymphony storage management platform. Degussa worked together with DataCore integrator Schelle GmbH in carrying out the project.
SANsymphony uses state-of-the-art technology to provide centralized and automated storage management, guaranteeing high application availability and performance, while optimizing existing storage resources. By delivering additional capacity dynamically when required, the storage network can be expanded as needed independently from storage vendor or server platform.
"We needed a cost-effective, platform-independent storage solution that would also provide high-availability and disaster recovery," says Willi Lövenich, IT manager at Degussa's Wesseling plant. "After consulting intensively with Schelle, we selected SANsymphony as a storage management solution that offered all the advantages we needed."
The computer center at the Degussa Wesseling location has two 'Powered by DataCore' storage domain servers (SDS) that control the allocation of storage for an environment with clustered application servers running Windows 2000. Additional servers will be integrated successively. The two storage domain servers, which form a virtualization platform for SANsymphony software, ensure optimum redundancy, thereby increasing security and flexibility for backup and restore processes. State-of-the-art backup functions such as snapshot and mirroring support fast disaster recovery. SANsymphony's Network Managed Volumes (NMVs) feature automatically allocates storage capacity from the SAN when it is needed and optimizes resource utilization, making it possible to assign distinct qualities of service to different storage domains.
"More and more customers rely on open storage solutions that not only overcome current problems, but also have a secure, effective and scalable architecture for future requirements, thereby saving money over the long term," says Uwe Kramer of Schelle GmbH. "By working together so successfully with DataCore Software, we can offer our customers a storage management package that enables them to expand their systems as needed, lowers the total cost of operation (TCO) and guarantees a higher return on investment (ROI)."
