DataCore Unveils Breakthrough Storage Management Services

SANsymphony™ 5.2 Consolidates Virtualization, Visualization, SRM, and Auto-provisioning Technologies in Network Layer

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (June 4, 2003) — DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class, open storage networking software, today introduced a broad spectrum of powerful storage services and innovations to manage growing storage network deployments. The new release of SANsymphony™ software greatly reduces manual storage tasks through automation and eliminates costly storage utilities licensed on tens or hundreds of servers, switches and disk arrays by consolidating them onto Windows Powered network nodes. Services such as physical to logical disk virtualization, volume management, resource management, and I/O path visualization that have been associated with host-intensive administration or vendor-specific hardware are offloaded to network-resident storage domain servers. The comprehensive fabric-based platform substantially reduces operational complexity and cost.

"Over the past five years, DataCore's customers have been replacing numerous administrative interfaces and multiple suppliers with a uniform layer of centrally managed software running as an integral element of their network infrastructure," notes Ken Horner, vice president of marketing at DataCore. "Our operating system and hardware-independent approach has proven to be invaluable for large enterprise customers and mid-size companies that simply don't have the staff, expertise or budget to manage heterogeneous SANs. The latest SANsymphony innovations make storage management all the more integrated, affordable and automated."

Exploits Latest Windows Server 2003 Storage Enhancements
Windows customers in particular, will find DataCore's newest release compelling whether running Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, Internet Information Systems, Media Services, Clusters or other native applications. SANsymphony now allows any of these environments to take advantage of DataCore's advanced auto-provisioning features, SAN-wide snapshots and remote mirroring as well as multi-path redundancy and network caching without introducing cumbersome and costly application-specific host agents. Windows Server 2003 environments can also utilize new storage services including Virtual Disk Services (VDS), Volume Shadow-Copy Services (VSS), and Multi-path I/O (MPIO) to request advanced functions from Powered by DataCore™ storage pools. System administrators benefit from a standard methodology for invoking storage configuration, space allocation and data replication services across the entire spectrum of workloads and storage devices.

The I/O Performance Leader Just Got Faster
Already the dominant turbo-charging virtualization engine in the industry with independently validated results in excess of 400,000 IOPS and 2.1 GB/sec sustained on just two inexpensive nodes, SANsymphony takes advantage of new Intel hyper-threaded CPUs and larger network caches to further accelerate the performance of storage assets. New multi-port host bus adapters have also been qualified, effectively doubling the port density per node while enhancing IOPS and throughput.

Advanced Network-based Auto-Provisioning and Storage Resource Management
The extensive use of automation and group actions in SANsymphony 5.2 allows a single storage administrator to manage many terabytes of distributed disks on behalf of not just Windows, but UNIX, Linux, MacOS and NetWare hosts. Rather than loading a multitude of SRM agents for each application and each operating system, SANsymphony gleans storage consumption and I/O rates directly from the virtual volumes statistics gathered in real-time across the network. Network Managed Volumes, DataCore's unique capacity allocation technique, provide just enough space just in time without guesswork. Disk demand and actual I/O rates can be captured and displayed for the overall storage pool, or for selected subsets that match the granularity desired by an organization. For example, virtual volumes may be categorized into flexible storage domains according to functional groups (finance, engineering, service) or they may be classified according to applications (Oracle OLTP, SQL Server Data Mining, Exchange Mail). These varied views provide invaluable insight into the utilization of resources and aid in capacity planning, billing, and load balancing. As importantly, SANsymphony takes advantage of the real-time instrumentation to self-regulate quality of service according to customer-prescribed priorities.

Auto-Discovery and Interactive Visualization
SANsymphony discovers prospective storage clients, storage devices, and interconnecting switches, automatically giving the IT staff a complete live picture of their storage network. The software assigns descriptive names to these assets. The active displays help isolate cabling and other hardware malfunctions reported to the centralized alarm console and event manager. Such built-in features replace separate host-based visualization tools.

Minimal Footprint and Licenses -- Maximum Performance and Control
Bill North, director of research, storage software, for IDC observes, "DataCore keeps the storage management footprint small and separate from the hardware and the applications, and still allows impressive control over the allocation, security, performance, and protection of the most critical resource -- data storage. This is absolutely imperative to keep sanity in bigger companies." Mr. North adds, "By placing the intelligence in the network rather than on the hosts or within the arrays, DataCore provides a flexible, centralized platform for managing storage provisioning and operations that has the potential to both increase confidence and reduce the labor content in these activities."
