DataCore Software Showcases Interoperability with iSCSI Implementations from Microsoft and Intel
Demonstrates Broad Connectivity Options through Open Storage Networking Standards
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (May 16, 2003) DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class, open-storage networking software recently demonstrated the interoperability of its SANsymphony consolidated storage management solution with iSCSI implementations from industry leaders Microsoft® Software Corporation and Intel® Corporation. The technology exhibits highlighted DataCore's protocol-independent approach to heterogeneous storage pooling, as well as the close collaboration between the companies.
DataCore's commitment to and support of the iSCSI standard was on display at two separate exhibits, alongside traditional disk drive interfaces, during this spring's Storage Networking World conference. One of the exhibits featured a purely software-based iSCSI implementation; the other relied on network interface cards that offload the iSCSI protocol processing from the servers.
In the Microsoft Partner pavilion, Powered by DataCore network-based storage virtualization nodes auto-provisioned disk capacity over Gigabit Ethernet for servers representing storage consumers. Each server was equipped with a beta implementation of Microsoft's iSCSI initiator driver, scheduled for general availability in June 2003. The virtualization nodes, as well as the servers, were running the Windows Server 2003 operating system. All systems used standard Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. To show broad network connectivity and protocol-independence, SANsymphony simultaneously provided direct-attached ATA storage resources to both iSCSI and Fibre Channel connected servers.
DataCore Software is a close partner of Microsoft Corporation, working with it on the beta iSCSI program for Windows Server 2003 and developing early support for the storage services provided by the new Windows platform.
Concurrently, at the Intel pavilion, Intel servers equipped with Intel's Pro/100T IP iSCSI Storage Adapter accessed 2TB Network Managed Volumes from a SANsymphony-managed storage pool. In this exhibit, the Powered by DataCore nodes also took advantage of a full hardware implementation of the iSCSI standard, exploiting an intelligent iSCSI host bus adapter (HBA) to offload iSCSI processing. The prototype iSCSI HBA employs Intel's X-Scale Micro-architecture Processor running iSCSI firmware from Wasabi. The demonstration showcased close cooperation between DataCore, Intel and Wasabi and their commitment to bring cost-effective, commodity-based storage products to market.
DataCore is also a development partner of Intel, working closely with it on new SAN connection methods and optimizing SANsymphony performance for the latest- generation technologies to ensure close synergy of operating system, processor and storage architectures.
DataCore also supports hybrid IP storage connections that take advantage of network-based wire-speed iSCSI-to-Fibre Channel converters.
"The debates over storage networking protocols get lost on us," said Ken Horner DataCore's vice president of marketing. "Not only do we enable connections using iSCSI, but we give customers a choice to offload network protocol handling if they so wish. And we even support the latest protocols to access the newest disk drives or legacy devices, regardless of the drive interface. SANsymphony delivers all of this, while turbo-charging their performance and centralizing customers' storage management; I'd say that's pretty open minded."
"DataCore's solution provides customers with the assurance that, whatever changes and advances may be made to the protocols used to connect storage to servers, SANs built around SANsymphony's network virtualization will be able to adapt and evolve without forklift upgrades," said Mike Kahn, managing director of The Clipper Group, Inc., technology acquisition consultants based in Wellesley, Mass. "This enables a long-term storage strategy to be adopted by organizations that may wish to deploy fibre channel connectivity for some back office critical servers, but who also need the flexibility of iSCSI for meeting the storage needs of more widely dispersed departmental servers."
