Conseco Finance Wins "Best Practices in Storage" Award for High Financial Return Using DataCore Software
SANsymphony-Based Storage Strategy Delivers Millions of Dollars in IT Savings
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 30, 2003) DataCore Software today announced that Conseco Finance Corporation has won a highly competitive Storage Networking World "Best Practices in Storage" award for the outstanding financial return the company achieved by implementing DataCore's SANsymphony storage management platform. The $38 billion financial services giant was singled out from more than 500 fellow storage networking innovators.
The award was given by IDG's Computerworld and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) at this year's Storage Networking World Spring 2003, the premier conference for the data storage industry.
"The SNW 'Best Practices in Storage' Awards Program recognizes the imaginative applications of storage technology that have enhanced companies' business," said Maryfran Johnson, editor in chief of Computerworld and one of the programs' judges. "The diverse roster of winners has achieved key storage networking goals, like getting more out of existing resources while cost-effectively protecting mission-critical data -- essential mandates for just about every enterprise."
Since installing SANsymphony to automate the management and allocation of storage, Conseco Finance has achieved significant savings. Most notably, the company has doubled its effective capacity utilization and deferred new storage purchases -- despite continually expanding data requirements. Conseco Finance was previously only able to tap 40 percent of its 70 terabytes of high-end capacity; today, its IT team is "buying back" capacity by migrating existing resources under the control of SANsymphony, boosting utilization rates to 85 percent.
"The ROI from reconfiguring our entire storage management architecture to take advantage of SANsymphony's capabilities was immediate," said Rod Lucero, chief architect for Conseco Finance. "We recently had an initiative that required nearly 1.4 terabytes of capacity; SANsymphony enabled us to tap previously unavailable resources to meet this need. At a cost of 8 cents per megabyte, we saved $136,000 in storage costs on this one project alone."
Conseco Finance makes good use of DataCore's Network Managed Volumes feature of SANsymphony to remove the guesswork from storage allocation, assigning "virtual" volumes to applications and letting the software automatically provision physical space in smaller chunks, only as needed. This capability eliminates over-provisioning, manual labor and downtime needed to resize or repartition volumes and re-configure arrays.
As an added benefit, SANsymphony's robust caching capability accelerates I/O performance, improves the efficiency of the business and increases the productivity of applications.
DataCore's Asynchronous IP Mirroring feature gives Conseco Finance the industry's most cost-effective disaster recovery offering to back-up critical data from the St. Paul, Minn. company headquarters to a second production data center in Tempe, Ariz., leveraging existing IP networks between the sites.
"Like just about every enterprise weathering today's economy, Conseco Finance needed to do more with less," said Ken Horner, DataCore's vice president of marketing. "With SANsymphony, Conseco Finance can extract the full value from its storage assets without the premium cost, eliminating the need to choose between reliability, response time and budget."
