Synovus Consolidates Storage Assets Under DataCore's Platform

Financial Services Company Increases Storage Utilization, Boosts Data Mining Performance and Achieves Cost-Effective Disaster Recovery with SANsymphony™

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 7, 2003) — DataCore Software today announced that Synovus Financial Corp. has implemented DataCore's enterprise-class open storage networking software to help the financial services giant extract maximum value from existing and new storage investments.

DataCore's SANsymphony™ storage management platform is helping Columbus, Ga.-based Synovus meet three key business issues: extend the life of existing storage resources, maximize utilization of 18 terabytes of storage capacity and create a secure and cost-effective disaster recovery strategy. In addition to simplifying its overall storage management, Synovus unexpectedly found that its complex data mining operations completed substantially faster because of SANsymphony's network I/O caching.

DataCore's hardware-independent software approach was the only one that could allow Synovus to harness its existing investments and incorporate previously direct-attached storage and external disk arrays -- from a range of hardware vendors -- into its new storage management methodology. This strategy greatly improves overall manageability, availability and performance. In addition, DataCore's Network Managed Volumes (NMVs) have reclaimed much of Synovus' wasted disk capacity, estimated at 50 percent of its installed space, allowing the company to meet rapidly growing storage requirements with existing resources, rather than making ineffective new disk purchases.

"We needed to free up large amounts of over-allocated storage, and granularly distribute capacity without constantly guessing how much to put where and when," said Kevin Gowen, director of network services, Synovus Financial Corp. "SANsymphony's pooling and automated provisioning delivers a highly available, high-performance storage architecture that allows us to quickly and efficiently allocate capacity just-in-time, wherever it's needed."

Such advanced SANsymphony features keep Synovus focused on their Customer Covenant, a commitment to deliver the highest levels of responsiveness, expertise, efficiency and accuracy for customers.

Disaster Recovery Paramount for Financial Services Industry
To protect against disasters, Synovus needs to replicate ever-increasing amounts of critical enterprise data to a remote site in an affordable manner. It's tapping SANsymphony's Asynchronous IP Mirroring (AIM) feature to cost-effectively replicate data using existing IP infrastructure, achieving significant savings and greater flexibility as compared with the other remote replication solutions Synovus evaluated.

"Business continuity and disaster recovery are an imperative in the financial services industry," said Ken Horner, DataCore's vice president of marketing. "DataCore enables secure, assured disaster protection while dramatically increasing the hard-dollar returns from storage investments - an undeniable value for companies like Synovus."

Aside from the clear advantages of having a well protected, consolidated and automated storage environment, DataCore's SAN-wide I/O caching boosts the performance of Synovus' database servers, reducing the time needed to complete complex data warehousing calculations from days to a few hours. This empowers Synovus to minimize how much they borrow from the Federal Reserve and reduce the level of deposits required to meet federal obligations -- key metrics of profitability.
