Wasatch Mutual Fund Boosts Storage Capacity Utilization and Performance with DataCore Software
Financial Advisor and Fund Management Company Also Eliminates Downtime and Implements Affordable Disaster Recovery with SANsymphony
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (March 4, 2003) DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class open storage networking software, has been selected by Wasatch Advisors, the Utah-based mutual fund firm, to substantially improve the utilization and availability of its enterprise storage resources. The solution, built on DataCore's SANsymphony storage management platform, achieves Wasatch's primary goal of extracting maximum value from existing and new storage investments.
Three key business issues, common to IT practices in the financial sector, drove the need for overhauling their storage management approach. Inefficient disk utilization in a direct-attached storage environment meant that just 27 percent of the available disk space was being effectively used, forcing them to buy much more storage than required. Second, a recent implementation of compliance-checking software on their equity trading servers seriously slowed response time, posing employee productivity and timeliness issues. Lastly, the cost to protect data by replicating it through conventional means to a remote site in compliance with SEC regulations and sound disaster recovery practices had proven unaffordable.
"The complexities of managing direct-attached storage almost inevitably entail wasting a tremendous amount of existing storage capacity," said Dwight Ricks, chief information officer, Wasatch Advisors, based in Salt Lake City. "SANsymphony's storage pooling and automated provisioning capabilities have easily doubled our disk utilization. Storage capacity can be automatically allocated where it's needed, when it's needed, all in the context of a reliable, highly available storage architecture. As an added win, SANsymphony noticeably accelerated the performance of our trading and compliance-checking applications."
Disaster Recovery
Implementing a reliable and cost-effective disaster recovery strategy ensures that Wasatch's mission-critical financial applications and data are protected against catastrophe at all times. With the added public pressure and looming regulatory actions to bolster disaster recovery across the financial industry, Wasatch valued SANsymphony's Asynchronous IP Mirroring (AIM) ability to cost-effectively replicate all their servers' data remotely using their existing IP infrastructure. This provides significant savings and greater flexibility compared with the other remote replication proposals Wasatch received.
"Everyone in the financial services industry is looking for new, innovative ways to better exploit IT assets and legitimately address business continuity despite the strain of shrinking budgets," said Ken Horner, vice president of marketing at DataCore. "Wasatch Advisors' successful retooling with SANsymphony will keep it ahead of the market -- in customer service, response time and technology. Its commitment to streamline storage management confirms DataCore's value for high-demand, data-intensive organizations -- and indicates where the industry is headed."
Wasatch Advisors was founded in 1975. The firm specializes in managing assets for institutional and individual clients through investments in small cap companies. The firm also manages Wasatch Funds, a family of eight no-load mutual funds. For more information on Wasatch call 1-800-551-1700 or visit the website at www.wasatchfunds.com.
