SES ASTRA (Luxembourg) Consolidates Its Storage Network With DataCore SANsymphony
DataCore SANsymphony Combines Flexible Management 5TB of Storage, With Remote Site Mirroring and Disaster Recovery Data Replication
Reading, February 5, 2003 DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class, open-storage networking software, today announced that SANsymphony had successfully been implemented into a major SAN for SES ASTRA, Europe's most popular satellite systems operator. Its initial phase has been so successful that the next phase for 2003 is now including disaster recovery and data replication to a secure remote site.
"We are delighted with SANsymphony as it enables us to integrate our existing equipment, thereby freeing us from disk vendor constraints, enabling us to meet our future needs in terms of storage capacity," affirms Daniel Bonnans, Office Automation Coordinator with SES Astra. "From now on, we can choose our disks independently of suppliers since DataCore's solution fully meets all our requirements in terms of performance and virtualisation."
According to Pierre Aguerreberry, Business Development Manager with DataCore Software France, "SANsymphony's interface will allow SES Astra to easily allocate storage resources and make the most of highly innovative functions such as dynamic LUN resizing and high application availability. Besides the consolidation of its storage capacities and simplified allocation on request, SANsymphony will guarantee SES ASTRA increased performance and total availability of information, even when a site is down."
In 2001, SES ASTRA realised its data storage capacities were close to saturation. A number of storage solutions were considered. However SANsymphony was the only solution to meet SES ASTRA's requirements, which included the ability to consolidate existing equipment, provide a high-performance, scalable system and simplify storage installation administration.
Once SANsymphony was chosen, SES Astra drew up specifications and called integrators for tenders. SES Astra opted for computersystems, DataCore's Elite partner in Luxembourg. During the summer of 2002, systems engineers from computersystems ensured the solution's implementation, including the installation of Hitachi Data Systems Thunder 9200 storage system.
SES ASTRA's network is shared between two remote computer centres on the same campus, 300 metres apart. Data processed is mainly back-office applications, particularly desktop applications, especially Lotus Notes files. The recently deployed SAN includes 10 of 36 existing applications servers (Windows NT, Windows 2000, Solaris and Linux). It handles a virtualised volume of 1.8 TB using two Hitachi 9200 storage arrays provided by computersystems and controlled by two DataCore storage domain servers hosting SANsymphony Network Edition on Windows 2000. The SAN's maximum capacity is 5 TB, allowing SES Astra 3 years' autonomy, in which it anticipates storage needs will double each year.
With DataCore's SANsymphony, all data will be replicated in synchronous mode from one centre to another via a SAN Fabric connection. A number of functions, including SANsymphony's Alternate Pathing, will be used to automatically switch one production volume to its mirror with no break in service or loss of data. SES Astra will also benefit from Networked Managed Volumes (NMV), DataCore's unique feature for the automatic management of dynamic logical volumes, also the Snapshot option, which SES ASTRA will be able to test the migration to Lotus Notes 6, scheduled for 2003, in complete security.
Following the deployment and commissioning of its SAN, SES Astra plans to start on the second phase of the project, which consists of implementing a disaster recovery plan, in which the data will be replicated asynchronously to an external site. The framework of the second SAN, will allow the company to reuse the Raid5 disks from servers migrated to SANsymphony.
"For computersystems, DataCore's SANsymphony represents a valuable asset since it allows us to be free from vendor proprietary; also, in terms of both return on investment and ease of the SAN's use, SANsymphony perfectly meets market requirements. Our aim is to maintain the highest possible certification level, continuing to expand in terms of new market shares," explains Xavier Dalmolin, SAN Storage Manager with computersystems, responsible for the SES Astra project.
About SES ASTRA
SES ASTRA possesses and uses the ASTRA satellite system, the largest digital and analogue TV satellite system in Europe, covering more than 91 million European homes. SES ASTRA has become the first operator to provide communication repeater availability and enhanced transmission security, by co-positioning commercial satellites on a unique orbital position. ASTRA's satellite fleet currently comprises 13 satellites, transmitting more than 1,100 analogue and digital TV/radio channels, as well as Internet and multimedia services. ASTRA's two main orbital positions over Europe are located at 19.2° East and 28.2° East. Additional services are offered from orbital positions 23.5°/24.2° East and 5.2° East.
