Lufthansa Systems Implements Storage Virtualization

Major Success for DataCore Software

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Dec. 11, 2002) — DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class, open storage networking software, today announced it is implementing one of the largest storage virtualization projects ever undertaken in Germany. IT service provider and systems integrator, Lufthansa Systems, is setting up a storage network extending across the entire company, providing 60 terabytes of storage space controlled by the SANsymphony™ open storage networking platform. By centralizing and virtualizing its storage, Lufthansa Systems is looking to reduce its overall storage-related system costs (TCO) by between 30 and 50 percent.

Within the framework of a storage consolidation project, Lufthansa Systems, one of the world's leading IT solutions providers for the airline and aviation sector, is converting locally connected direct-attached storage into an existing storage area network (SAN). Fifteen of the 60 terabytes of storage space are already integrated within the enterprise storage network. In this context, SANsymphony will be used for the central management and administration of the storage network. Installed on 12 Storage Domain Servers designed with built-in redundancy, SANsymphony will regulate data access between the SAN and applications. SANsymphony permits dynamic allocation of storage resources, increases the utilization of available storage capacity and reduces administrative costs at the same time. In addition, the open platform offers extensive potential for savings in the process of buying additional storage capacity.

"Since 1998, we have been working with a Fibre Channel SAN and have been constantly extending it. At the same time, it is important to keep down administrative costs," says Michael Schwarz, product manager, Enterprise Storage at Lufthansa Systems. "That's why we have been looking for a solution which is not only reliable, offering both a high level of performance and availability, but also drives down costs over the long term. We have found this solution in SANsymphony. We anticipate that with centralization and virtualization, we will be able to cut our storage TCO by between 30 and 50 percent."

Enterprise Storage operates a heterogeneous system environment with applications running under the IBM AIX, SUN Solaris, HP-UX, Novell, Windows 2000 and Windows NT operating systems. Apart from central administration and storage allocation, Lufthansa Systems makes use of SANsymphony's SAN backup options throughout its environment (snapshot, alternate pathing, mirroring etc.). The allocation of resources in the storage network takes place automatically by means of Networked Managed Volumes, a DataCore technology which signals a maximum of storage space to hosts, but physically only occupies the storage space actually required.

"From many points of view, SANsymphony software represents a technological breakthrough in the storage management space," said Volker Sommer, European regional sales director at DataCore Software. "SANsymphony has delivered proven performance in large-scale environments. Our installation in the heterogeneous environment at Lufthansa Systems supplies them with a clear answer: After intensive testing, the decision was made to adopt DataCore's solution."

The Enterprise Storage Network is to be set up and completed in 2003 and will be also used for external storage services at Lufthansa Systems. A central backup strategy is also to be implemented with SANsymphony, to run in parallel.

"SANsymphony releases the intelligence previously retained within very expensive hardware boxes so that it is available throughout the network, and at an attractive price," according to Schwarz. "For us, this opens up new opportunities in respect of backup and restore, and offers us every freedom when it comes to future storage-related investments, extensions and additions."
