DataCore Announces SANsymphony 5.0 — The Storage Networking Platform for the Enterprise

Setting the Standard for Storage Management and Business Productivity

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (January 22, 2002) — DataCore Software, the leading provider of storage virtualization and networking software, announced it is now shipping SANsymphony 5.0 — a major advance in enterprise-wide storage management. SANsymphony 5.0 represents the industry's most comprehensive and powerful open storage networking platform. DataCore's software provides uniform management across the diversity of enterprise storage resources while serving as a base platform for advanced functionality, substantially faster performance, broad connectivity and extensible services for mission-critical applications. With this platform, storage consumers gain unprecedented cost savings and enhanced business productivity. SANsymphony is available immediately from DataCore and its worldwide business partners, including IBM, Fujitsu and others.

SANsymphony 5.0 features breakthroughs in storage network manageability through automation, robust business recovery options, 4x performance acceleration, simple administrative interfaces and the industry's broadest range of wire-agnostic connectivity. SANsymphony's automated centralized services and discovery capabilities replace much of the manual intervention and disruption that cripples business operations and overwhelms administrative personnel today. Such built-in intelligence and automation ensures that servers, storage and employees are fully utilized, where previously there was a significant waste of time, money and effort.

SANsymphony removes existing limitations on connectivity and the scope of control to consolidate storage management for all three tiers of corporate consumers, dramatically improving asset utilization and business productivity from large back-office application servers, LAN-attached workgroup servers and NAS systems, as well as remote servers, personal computers and mobile laptops. As a completely open solution, the product controls, allocates, protects and replicates disk capacity residing on all major storage devices (Compaq, EMC, HDS, HP, IBM and Sun) and offers the industry's widest choice of 'IP-based storage' and Fibre Channel connections (IP/LANs, IP/WANs, iSCSI, Fibre Channel [FC] and Hybrid IP/FC networks).

"SANsymphony 5.0 further solidifies DataCore's position as the de facto standard for virtualization technology. New functions including network managed volumes and storage over IP in addition to fiber channel support will continue to allow the company to maintain it's lead in product maturity and feature set," said Steven F.X. Murphy, president and CEO of Fujitsu Softek.

Three Storage Management BreakthroughsUnmatched Savings and Productivity
In particular, DataCore is introducing three new storage management advances. These are (1) an Open Enterprise-Wide Storage Networking Platform, (2) Networked Managed Volumes, and (3) Flexible Storage Domains.

"The combination of vision and customer inputs over the past three years has come together in this significant milestone for business productivity," said George Teixeira, president and CEO of DataCore. "SANsymphony has developed broad appeal from satisfied customers, major OEMs and worldwide distribution partners capable of providing total storage solutions to the global marketplace. The momentum we have established enables us to address the overwhelming industry need for a common platform on which to base and rationalize the diversity of storage offerings. Such convergence is driving DataCore's technology to become the de-facto standard in the management of storage networks."

Open Storage Networking PlatformYields Ten-Fold Increase in Managed Storage per Administrator
Storage management has suffered from fragmented approaches with products that address a very narrow slice of the storage puzzle, especially from the perspective of control and data protection. There has been no continuity from server-based utilities, to array-based tools and most of the storage networking focus has been on back-office applications leaving the heavily populated LAN-attached systems and mobile users vulnerable. SANsymphony 5.0 takes on the larger scope of storage management as an open storage networking platform that enables corporations to consolidate space allocation and data protection across the enterprise, independent of the underlying size and shape of hardware. In effect, the personnel and resources whose span was once limited to the localized Data Center can now extend their support and services to the 60 percent of storage clients outside the glass house using the same management umbrella and distributed storage pool. The rewards include a tenfold increase in the managed space per person, the elimination of storage-related downtime, affordable and pervasive business continuance and extended utilization of the existing infrastructure.

Network Managed VolumesMore than Doubles Disk Utilization and Eliminates Downtime
This concept moves volume management largely out of each client's operating system and consolidates it as a network-wide automated facility. Rather than taking poor guesses at what size disks applications will use over time and trying to keep up with a myriad of servers, SANsymphony assigns arbitrarily large virtual disks to hosts and automatically apportions physical space in smaller chunks only as needed. The benefits include 'just enough and just-in-time' dynamic capacity allocation from network storage pools, disk space requirements collapsed to a minimum, fully utilized capacity without over provisioning and no downtime or administrator intervention to resize or repartition host disks.

Flexible Storage DomainsFirst to Automate Control over Quality of Service and Security
As one takes on consolidated management and security for the enterprise at large, the need arises to align facets of control and accounting along organizational lines. SANsymphony's storage domains support this requirement by providing departmental visibility and control for metrics important to charge-back and billing, distributing administrative responsibility when appropriate and centralizing security policy. Storage Domains also ensure that quality of service delivered by the storage network is prioritized according to the relative importance of the competing workloads and the class of storage required.

Among the economic benefits from DataCore's open storage networking platform are faster return on investment and dramatically lower total cost of ownership from companies' existing IT resources. The most cost-conscious CIOs will be impressed by how little it takes to get their new storage infrastructure and processes to pay off.

"DataCore understands the difficult problem of centralizing enterprise-wide storage management under a scalable, yet open software platform," said Randy Kerns, partner at Evaluator Group. "They've taken a quantum leap that unifies these functions while remaining agnostic to the various vendor nuances, thereby returning tremendous economic value to corporations large and small — a financial benefit that keeps paying back as storage demands grow. It's a very compelling solution to the common under-utilization of disk space and the exposure from poorly protected storage resources during these most pressing economic times."
