DataCore Turbo-Charges SANs, Achieves Record-Shattering Breakthrough in Storage Performance
Independent Tests Confirm 2X Performance Speedup Over Standalone Arrays
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Oct. 9, 2001) Fujitsu Softek announced that its 'Powered by DataCore™' software has more than doubled the performance of the world's fastest disk arrays. The record-shattering results are attributed to turbo-charging storage virtualization technology supplied by DataCore Software, the leading provider of storage virtualization and networking software.
"Fujitsu Softek christened its new multi-vendor, multi-million dollar Competency Center with this revealing benchmark," said Erich Flynn, vice president of Worldwide Marketing at Fujitsu Softek. "In the Center, customers, media and analysts are witnessing a relatively small Softek Virtualization SAN, 'Powered by DataCore', that yields an amazing 104,000 I/Os per second and about 560 MB per second per node. That means for a small incremental investment, Softek-virtualized SANs can deliver roughly 2.5 times greater performance than the industry leading hardware solutions can achieve on their own."
The accomplishments are that much more impressive given that competing virtualization products have been criticized for slowing down I/O performance.
"This is much-needed good news for budget-strapped customers trying to squeeze more from their storage investments," acclaimed Michael Peterson, president of Strategic Research Corp. "DataCore's incredible ability to multiply the performance and utilization of existing assets for a fraction of an array's cost clearly demonstrates that it has deciphered the code to unmatched enterprise scalability."
These impressive results only require an inexpensive Intel-based server operating as a SAN virtualization node in front of the disk arrays. The node is configured with Softek Virtualization software 'Powered by DataCore', dual 1GHz Pentium-3 processors and six QLogic SANblade 2300 Fibre Channel adapters. Significantly larger numbers are achievable through the use of larger virtualization nodes with more Fibre Channel adapters or by adding linearly scalable virtualization nodes to the SAN in N+1 redundant fashion.
"QLogic's SANblade 2Gbps host bus adapters combined with DataCore's advanced caching capabilities brings storage networking performance to a new level," said Frank Berry, vice president of corporate marketing, QLogic Corp. "Our end-to-end SAN infrastructure products support industry-standard interfaces that create an open systems design architecture, greatly enhancing SAN solutions, like DataCore's, with broader interoperability and performance."
Keys to DataCore Software's outstanding performance are its powerful caching technology and innovative I/O polling techniques that significantly reduce I/O delays. Additionally, the scalable N+1 design allows integrators and customers to create cost-effective high-availability networks with unprecedented data protection for maximum uptime and fault tolerance.
"Fujitsu Softek's exceptional benchmark corroborates what DataCore customers and partners have been realizing when implementing a 'Powered by DataCore' SAN," said Ziya Aral, DataCore's Chairman and CTO. "It's a huge upside for customers and partners alike."
DataCore's software is the only virtualization technology suitable for enterprise-wide storage area networks in mixed-platform environments.
