Softek Virtualization Software Sets a New Benchmark in Storage Performance

'Turbo Charged' Software More than Doubles Performance of Existing Storage Area Networks

SUNNYVALE, CA (October 4, 2001) — Fujitsu Softek's new Softek Virtualization™ outperformed standalone hardware arrays by more than two-to-one in recent laboratory tests. The benchmark confirms that Softek Virtualization, Powered by DataCore, not only centralizes and consolidates administration of storage assets, but greatly accelerates the performance of existing Storage Area Networks (SANs), by more than doubling I/O's per second and data transfer rates.

Using an inexpensive, off-the-shelf server as a SAN virtualization node, the Softek Virtualization software sustained an unparalleled 104,000 I/Os per second and a throughput of more than 560 MB/sec - 2.5 times faster than the industry leading storage array can achieve on its own. Part of the secret behind this performance is the caching performed by the Softek Virtualization product between application servers and the storage arrays. Such unmatched performance is attainable even in a heterogeneous environment consisting of mixed operating systems and various storage suppliers.

"These unprecedented results mean that in a configuration costing less than $150,000, including a 1 TB fiber channel storage subsystem, we will be able to deliver 208,000 I/Os per second and more than 1.12 GB/sec throughput performance rates at a fraction of the cost of most traditional hardware-based storage solutions," said Nick Tabellion, CTO of Fujitsu Softek.

These results were delivered with a $4,000 entry-level Intel-based server. The server was configured with dual 1GHz Pentium III processors and equipped with six QLogic 2300 Fibre Channel adapters. Significantly larger numbers are achievable through the use of larger storage servers or additional Fibre Channel adapters. In addition, performance scales linearly with each storage server (virtualization node) added to the SAN.

"Softek Virtualization is designed to be the best choice for implementing a new SAN or adding to an existing one because it is less complex and less costly than the traditional fiber channel SAN," said Fujitsu Softek VP of Worldwide Marketing, Erich Flynn. "Today we've proven that it is also perhaps the highest performance solution available as well."

Protects Storage Investments, Improves TCO
Softek Virtualization software eases the burden of storage management by allowing companies to manage up to ten times the amount of data with existing resources. It helps protect existing storage investments by enabling customers to centralize and consolidate islands of storage, even those from competing vendors like EMC, Hitachi, Compaq and Fujitsu, into networked storage pools that can be used by applications throughout the enterprise. The product further reduces complexity and cost by including the Business Continuance features of Mirroring, Snapshot, N+1 Failover, and Off-site IP Replication all in one product.

"As the first fruits of our technical collaboration with Fujitsu Softek, DataCore is very pleased with Fujitsu Softek's benchmarking achievements," said Ziya Aral, chairman of DataCore Software. "This is the perfect answer to any misinformation about the performance 'tax' of our virtualization layer. Unlike other approaches, this virtualization software significantly improves the performance of the SAN regardless of its hardware infrastructure."

Competency Center Proven
Fujitsu Softek performed its testing at the new Fujitsu Competency Center in Sunnyvale, CA, where customers, analysts and media can see all Fujitsu Softek products perform in a multi-vendor, multi-platform environment. The Competency Center is a 24,000 square foot, multi-million dollar facility built as a development, demonstration and test center. It will allow customers to gain confidence in Fujitsu Softek products in a low-risk environment, so they can see first-hand how solutions will perform. To support the company's commitment to hardware independence and interoperability, the environment includes products from leading manufacturers including SUN, HP, IBM, Dell, Brocade, McData, Vixel, EMC, QLogic and Fujitsu.

Fujitsu Softek will feature Softek Virtualization software at Gartner ITxpo in Orlando, FL, Oct. 8-12, 2001, and at Gartner Storage Expo in Birmingham, UK, Oct. 17-18, 2001.

Maximizing ROI with Softek SANView
For a limited time, the Softek Virtualization product will be bundled with Softek SANView™ software, which enables the network storage manager to see all the components of the complex global storage network at one time and take a proactive approach to SAN management. The bundled products are an industry-exclusive and allow global corporations to achieve a faster ROI when installing a high performance SAN in the near term.
