DataCore Unveils "IP Storage" Capabilities
Enterprise-wide Storage Pooling Now Available to IP-connected Clients
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (September 4, 2001) DataCore™ Software, the leading supplier of storage networking and virtualization software, today introduced the most recent of its IP Storage capabilities. The addition of IP to its broad range of Fibre Channel connectivity options affirms DataCore's wire and protocol agnostic approach to storage networking and reinforces its performance leadership.
"Our IP Storage offering makes the benefits of network storage pooling available on a truly enterprise-wide level, from the data center to the desktop, while allowing users to leverage the availability and price benefits of their IP infrastructure," said Ken Horner, vice president of marketing at DataCore.
Leveraging IP and Storage Pooling throughout the Enterprise
Today's announcement focuses on two key deliverables:
- SCSI over IP protocol (iSCSI) as a means to connect clients to centrally-managed storage pools
- High-performance and massively scalable hybrid IP storage area networks (SANs).
"We see this as a great way for users to get a handle around all their disparate storage architectures and be able to manage them centrally," said Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst, Enterprise Storage Group. "Talk about future-proofing this is it!"
iSCSI for IP Clients
The latest feature rollout ensures that 'Powered by DataCore' storage pools can serve capacity on-demand to iSCSI-equipped clients, as well as Fibre Channel-attached hosts. The choice is driven by customers' network preferences, performance objectives and cost tradeoffs.
DataCore delivers unique performance advantages to iSCSI users. With a 'Powered by DataCore' storage control node in place, an end-to-end iSCSI implementation can achieve nearly 4,000 I/Os per second per channel on unaccelerated 1000 BASE T Gigabit Ethernet hardware. This impressive performance for iSCSI networks scales for each channel added to the storage control node.
"The Fujitsu Softek Suite of storage management software products is built on giving our customers choice choice of hardware vendor and OS platform. This additional connectivity and scalability provided by DataCore continues to improve the freedom of choice for Softek Virtualization customers," said Erich Flynn, vice president of worldwide marketing, Fujitsu Softek. "Customers now have the ability to deploy native Fibre Channel or IP Storage when and where it makes sense for them to do so."
Hybrid Networks - A Breakthrough Approach
In addition to pure iSCSI networks, DataCore enables a powerful hybrid approach that addresses the current performance deficiencies of accelerated iSCSI hardware. A hybrid network combines IP client-connectivity with high-performance Fibre Channel (FC) networked storage services to ensure scalable throughput and response characteristics. Essentially, DataCore leverages the current performance advantages of FC for the storage network, while employing iSCSI connectivity and fabric for broad client access, yielding the best of both worlds.
"DataCore's software innovations leverage the huge installed base of IP networks to meet a wide range of customer needs. Nishan's advanced multiprotocol IP Storage products, combined with DataCore's leadership in network storage services, offer organizations high-performance, scalable, enterprise-wide solutions," said Randy Fardal, vice president of marketing at, Nishan Systems.
Unmatched IP Performance and Scalability
DataCore's SANsymphony software carries its track record of unmatched performance and massive scalability into the realm of IP Storage. Robust, dual-redundant, SANsymphony configurations priced from approximately $80,000 achieve more than 200,000 I/Os per second and over 1 GB per second, making them uniquely suitable for very large numbers of iSCSI storage consumers. These phenomenal figures scale linearly as nodes are added to expand the workloads serviced by the consolidated storage pool.
The performance and scaling attributes are significant in two ways. First, a relatively inexpensive infrastructure investment can be amortized over a sizable number of users, ensuring that all benefit from a common, centrally managed storage resource. They also ensure that the most demanding I/O requirements are satisfied without compromising quality of service or data availability.
Addressing Requirements of Diverse Storage Consumers
From a broad network perspective, DataCore's IP Storage capabilities match the appropriate level of performance, availability and security to the storage and retrieval requirements of varied applications. They also insulate these applications and the associated personnel from storage and networking decisions that in the past have prevented them from running as smoothly and cost-effectively as an integrated enterprise. These initial advancements are significant indicators of DataCore's comprehensive approach to delivering widely accessible advanced storage network services.
