Daytona Beach Community College Relies on DataCore's Storage Virtualization Software to Control its SAN

SANsymphony™ Delivers Flexibility and Simplicity to Manage All Online Storage Assets

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Mar. 26, 2001) - DataCore Software, the leading provider of advanced storage virtualization and networking software, today announced that Daytona Beach Community College (DBCC) has joined its rapidly expanding customer base. DataCore's SANsymphony storage virtualization software simplifies the management of DBCC's more than one terabyte of data, by consolidating all of its storage resources into a virtual network storage pool.

With more than 33,000 enrolled students, Daytona Beach Community College offers a full range of courses of study, granting two-year associate's degrees. The college uses SANsymphony to manage the growing amount of data generated by all aspects of the college's administration, including student records, accounting, registration and email. DBCC was adding approximately 30 to 50 gigabytes of new storage capacity as often as every 10 weeks to accommodate its four campuses and one training center. DBCC twice confronted a system shutdown because disk storage was exhausted.

"My staff and I were overwhelmed by the explosion of data that the college was producing," said Mike Burke, director of IS and networking for the college. "Now that all of our storage resources are centrally managed by SANsymphony, we can configure virtual volumes of extra storage capacity with a simple mouse click -- and my users never have to cope with disruptions."

SANsymphony's open approach to managing the storage area network gives DBCC the ability to leverage existing storage assets and quickly and easily add, reassign and upgrade storage resources wherever and whenever needed without any business interruption.

After considering several vendors' proprietary solutions, DBCC turned to NaviStor.Com, a Boston-based storage integrator, to create an economical solution that would incorporate all of the college's computing platforms, which include HP/UX, Windows NT and Novell NetWare. NaviStor architected and installed a 'Powered by DataCore' storage virtualization node NaviSAN solution, integrating Brocade switches, IBM servers and StorageTek disk arrays and tape library. With SANsymphony, NaviStor supplied DBCC with the flexibility, manageability and performance it required.

"Institutions worldwide are facing the same challenges as Daytona Beach Community College: enormous growth of stored data, lack of interoperability and tight operating budgets," said Ken Horner, vice president of marketing at DataCore. "With significant hardware investments, companies don't want to be locked into a single-vendor solution that can't work with all their existing platforms. 'Powered by DataCore' solutions utilize existing storage resources and scale to meet the requirements of organizations small and large across virtually every line of business."

SANsymphony's vendor-independent approach allows network administrators to distribute available volumes from mixed storage devices within the networked storage pools and serve capacity to any application server on an as-needed basis. SANsymphony delivers an immediate ROI by freeing staff from time-consuming reconfigurations, eliminating downtime for network administrators and allowing administrators to get the most out of hardware resources.

SANsymphony ensures enterprise-level data protection through a fault-tolerant architecture that eliminates single points of failure and offers advanced security for network-wide management and control of storage assets, while leveraging sophisticated caching to improve transaction throughput and network performance. SANsymphony is the first solution to give companies flexibility in managing their growing terabytes of storage, allowing them to distribute storage simply and non-disruptively to UNIX, Windows, Linux, Mac OS and NetWare servers.
